Prandin (Repaglinide) is an oral diabetes medication that helps to control blood sugar levels by causing the pancreas to produce insulin. Prandin is used in combination with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar. Repaglinide belongs to the class of drugs called meglitinides for treating type 2 diabetes. This medication works by acting on the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. This medication is taken before meals to enhance insulin production during the meal. Prandin is not for treating Type 1 diabetes. Glucose intolerance that causes diabetes type 2 is caused by reduced insulin secretion from the pancreas after meals and resistance of the body's cells to insulin's effect which is to stimulate the cells to remove glucose from the blood. This leads to high levels of glucose in the blood.
Repaglinide can cause low blood sugar if you take other diabetes medications. The symptoms of low blood sugar include chills, cold sweat, dizziness, drowsiness, fainting, fast heartbeat, shaking, tingling of hands and feet, etc. You may experience blurred vision, dizziness or drowsiness due to extremely low or high blood sugar. You should not drive, use machinery or do any activity that requires you to be alert. Limit alcohol while taking this medication because it can increase the risk of developing low blood sugar. Prandin should not be used during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
