Purinethol (Mercaptopurine) is a prescription drug used as part of a combination chemotherapy maintenance regimen to treat acute lymphocytic leukemia, a type of cancer that begins in the white blood cells. The active ingredient in Purinethol is Mercaptopurine. Mercaptopurine belongs to the class of medications called purine antagonists (antineoplastic). It acts as an analog of naturally occurring purines hypoxanthine and guanine, thereby stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Purinethol are nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, fever, weakness, rash, diarrhea, cough, anorexia, dizziness, and hair loss (alopecia).
