Exelon Patch Information:

Exelon Patches (Rivastigmine) are a transdermal medication used to treat dementia in people with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. Exelon is a reversible cholinesterase inhibitor that works by enhancing cholinergic function. It does this by increasing the concentration of acetylcholine through the inhibition of its breakdown. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter, and an increase of acetylcholine may lessen the dementia caused by the disease, and improve the quality of life for many patients. As the disease progresses and fewer cholinergic neurons remain functionally intact, the effects of Exelon may lessen. Exelon is not a cure for dementia. Before using Exelon, tell your doctor about any medications you are currently taking in order to reduce the risk of interactions. As well, tell your doctor if you have a history of ulcers or stomach bleeding, seizures, heart problems, liver or kidney disease, urination problems, or asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, or another breathing disorder. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, as it is not known whether this medication will harm an unborn baby. Ask your doctor about any risks associated with breastfeeding while using Exelon.

Common side effects of using Exelon Transdermal Patches include upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or weakness. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medication affects you. Talk to you doctor about managing these side effects if they worsen or persists. Contact your doctor at once if you experience severe or ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, loss of appetite, or weight loss, unusual or bloody stools, cough with bloody mucus, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, light-headedness or weakness, tremors or convulsions, painful or difficult urination, severe skin irritation, or symptoms of dehydration. If you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
