Urea (Unscented Urea) is an over-the-counter medication used to hydrate and restore softness, especially to dry and rough skin. Dry and rough skin conditions include eczema, psoriasis, and corns callus. Harsh soaps, aging, heat, medical treatments, and too much bathing can cause dry skin. Urea is also used to treat nail problems like ingrown nails. The medicine can soften damaged toenails or fingernails so they can be removed without surgery. Urea may also be used to remove dead tissue in some wounds to promote healing. The active ingredient in Urea is Unscented Urea. Unscented Urea belongs to a class of drugs called keratolytic agents. It works by softening and dissolving keratin, a substance holding the top layer of the skin cells together, to increase moisture in the skin. This effect helps the dead skin cells fall off and helps the skin retain moisture.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Urea. The most common side effects of Urea may include the following:
• Burning;
• Itching;
• Redness;
• Stinging

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Severe redness or irritation of treated skin;
• Signs of a skin infection

These are not all of the side effects of Urea. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.

You should not use Urea if you are allergic to Unscented Urea or any ingredient in Urea. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or planning to be pregnant;
• Have skin infections or sores

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Urea and other medicines, especially topical medications. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known if Urea will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. It is not known if Urea passes into breast milk or if it may affect a nursing infant. Use this medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes. Urea is a topical medication. It is available in the form of lotion, ointment, and cream. Use this medicine on the skin only. Do not take it by mouth. If the medication gets into your eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina, rinse with water immediately. Before applying Urea, wash the area to be treated with a mild soap or cleanser. Apply the medication on slightly damp skin and rub it in as completely as possible. If you are applying this medication to your nails, avoid getting it on your cuticles or surrounding skin. Apply Urea topical generously to your nail and allow the medicine to dry. You may cover the treated nail with a bandage or gauze if your doctor advises. You should be able to remove the treated nail after a few days. Wash your hands after applying this medicine unless you are treating the skin on your hands. Store Urea at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
