Monovisc Information:
Monovisc is a medication typically used to provide relief for knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. Monovisc is typically used after other arthritis medications have not worked. Monovisc contains a glycosaminoglycan called hyaluronic acid that works as a tissue lubricant. Hyaluronic also works to replace synovial fluid that has lost its viscoelastic properties, which is a common occurrence in osteoarthritis. This helps to act as a shock absorber for joints, and reduces pain in the knee. Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you have an allergy to gram positive bacteria proteins, a bleeding or blood clotting disorder, or an infection in you knee or in the skin around your knee. It is unknown whether Monovisc will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you plan on becoming pregnant while using Monovisc. It is also unknown whether Monovisc passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding while using this medication. Monovisc is not approved for use by anyone younger than 21 years old.
Common side effects of Monovisc may include joint pain, stiffness, or swelling, itching, numbness, or tingling, headache or dizziness, back pain, or swelling, pain, redness, or mild discomfort where the medication was injected. Call your doctor immediately if you experience bleeding, increased knee pain, or signs of an infection (warmth, swelling, redness) around your knee. If you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
