Serc (Betahistine) is used for the treatment of vertigo associated with Meniere’s disease. Meniere’s disease is a condition of the inner ear that typically causes attacks of vertigo (a feeling of spinning), loss of hearing and noises in the ear. The attacks can differ in how severe they are and how often they occur. Betahistine works by improving the flow of blood in your inner ear. This reduces a build-up of pressure and eases your symptoms.

We currently have the brand Betaserc from Turkey manufactured by Abbott. The generic comes from Canada and is manufactured by a different manufacturer. Betahistine is available in the strength of 8mg, 16mg and 24mg tablets.

Before you start taking Betahistine, inform your doctor about your medical history, such as allergies, ulcers, asthma, and pheochromocytoma. You should also inform your doctor of all non-prescription and prescription medications you are currently using including OTC and herbal medications. There may be an interaction between Betahistine and other medications such as a diphenhydramine, cetirizine, chlorpheniramine, salbutamol, salmeterol, fenoterol, formoterol. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking this medication. It is unknown if betahistine passes into breast milk. If you are breast-feeding your baby and are taking this medication, it may affect your baby.
