Indications

NuvaRing is a hormonal birth control method that prevents ovulation.

The vaginal ring combines etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol which inhibit ovulation by suppressing gonadotropins. NuvaRing also alters the cervical mucus and endometrium which makes it harder for sperm to enter the uterus and fertilize eggs.

Compared to oral contraceptive pills, NuvaRing is equally as effective while avoiding the risk of missing doses or misusing the medication. This vaginal ring is also well-tolerated among users and successfully inhibits ovulation during treatment.

Uses and Dosage

NuvaRings release 120mcg of etonogestrel and 15mcg of ethinyl estradiol each day. Follow all your doctor’s instructions for usage and read packaging labels carefully. Your doctor will instruct you how to insert the rings and which day to do so.

  • To begin NuvaRing treatment, insert the first ring on your first day of menstrual bleeding.
  • You can also insert on days 2 to 5 of your cycle but barrier method contraception should be used for the first 7 days of NuvaRing usage.
  • Choose an insertion position most comfortable for you such as lying down, squatting, or standing with one leg up.
  • Compress the ring and insert into your vagina or use the NuvaRing applicator to insert
  • The ring’s exact position will not alter its function or efficacy
  • Keep each NuvaRing inserted for three consecutive weeks
  • Remove by hooking your index finger under the ring’s forward rim or by grasping the rim between your index and middle finger, then pull out the device
  • Place used rings in the foil pouch and discard out of reach from children and pets
  • Withdrawal bleeding can occur, tell your doctor if it continues or is very heavy
  • Your menstrual bleeding usually occurs on day 2 or 3 of the week-long break
  • After exactly one week, even if you are still bleeding, insert a new ring
  • Call your doctor if you fall off schedule or if you have trouble removing a ring
  • Store unused rings at room temperature for up to 4 months away from heat and light
  • Do not flush used rings down the toilet

Cautions

NuvaRing will not prevent pregnancy if only worn during intercourse. The vaginal ring must be worn for three weeks straight.

You will not be protected from sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV or AIDS when using NuvaRings. Using condoms is the only way to stay protected from these diseases.

Do not wear more than one ring at a time.

Do not use NuvaRing if you are pregnant or if you recently had a baby.

Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while using NuvaRings because it can interact with ethinyl estradiol and etonogestrel, leading to adverse reactions.

NuvaRing can increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack, especially if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or if you are overweight. Your risk is highest during the first year of NuvaRing usage and if you insert a ring after not wearing one for 4 weeks or longer.

Smoking while using NuvaRing can greatly increase your risk of developing blood clots, strokes, or heart attacks. If you are older than 35 and smoke, do not use this vaginal ring.

Do not use NuvaRing if you have any of the following:

  • Untreated or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Increased risk of blood clots due to heart problems or a hereditary blood disorder
  • Circulation problems (especially if caused by diabetes)
  • History of hormone-related cancer or breast, uterus, or vaginal cancer
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding that has not been checked by a doctor
  • Severe migraines (especially if you are older than 35)
  • Liver disease or cancer
  • If you smoke and are older than 35
  • If you also take hepatitis C medication that contains ombitasvir, paritaprevir, or ritonavir

To ensure your safety when using NuvaRing, tell your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:

  • Heart disease, high blood pressure, or if you are prone to blood clots
  • High cholesterol or triglycerides
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Depression
  • Diabetes, underactive thyroid, gallbladder disease
  • Seizures or migraines
  • Irregular menstrual cycles, toxic shock syndrome or easy vaginal irritation
  • Jaundice caused by pregnancy or birth control pills
  • Family history of breast cancer
  • Fibrocystic breast disease or an abnormal mammogram
  • If you have recently had a miscarriage or abortion

Some drugs can interact with etonogestrel and/or ethinyl estradiol to cause adverse effects or decrease efficacy of the medications. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicine, vitamins, and herbal products, but especially any of the following:

  • Aprepitant, bosentan, griseofulvin, St. John’s wort
  • Efavirenz, nevirapine
  • Antiviral medicine for hepatitis C or HIV/AIDS
  • Tuberculosis medication
  • Seizure medicine

Continue using barrier birth control for at least 28 days after your last dose of any of these listed medications.

FAQ

How effective is NuvaRing?

NuvaRing has been shown to be 98% effective at preventing pregnancy by suppressing your ovulation and altering your cervical mucus and endometrium. However, the effectiveness of this vaginal ring depends on proper usage.

What does NuvaRing feel like when it is inserted?

Most women are unable to feel NuvaRing once it is inserted, but it may move around slightly and could slip out while removing a tampon, during intercourse, or from strain during a bowel movement. If you do feel discomfort, the ring probably isn’t fully inserted, and you can gently push it up into your vagina.
