Dosage

The brand Benzaclin and its generic Clindamycin/Benzoyl Peroxide are available in the strength of 1 %/5 %/50 gm topical gel only.

Usage

Benzaclin (Clindamycin/Benzoyl Peroxide) is a combination topical medication for treating acne vulgaris (pimples). Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition when hair follicles become blocked with dead skin cells, bacteria, and skin oils (sebum). The active ingredients in Benzaclin are Clindamycin and Benzoyl Peroxide. Clindamycin belongs to a class of drugs called antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria that cause acne. Benzoyl Peroxide belongs to a class of medications called topical acene agents. It removes old skin by causing skin to shed and peel, which is good for clearing up acne. It may take several weeks to months for your acne to improve.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Benzaclin are itching, burning sensation at the application site, dry skin, redness, and skin peeling. Stop using Benzaclin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as: • Abdominal cramping; • Blood or mucus in stool; • Severe diarrhea; • Worsening of your symptoms

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Benzaclin topical cream, inform your doctor if you are allergic to it or have a history of atopy. Benzaclin is for external (skin) use only; avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Wash your hands before and after rubbing Benzaclin on the affected skin area. Wash your face with a mild cleanser, and pat dry before applying the medicine. Do not apply Benzaclin on sunburned, dry, or chapped skin. It may take several weeks for your symptoms to improve. Do not stop using this medication without talking to your doctor. Benzaclin can make you sunburn more easily. Minimize sun exposure following application. It would be best to wear protective clothing and use sunscreen SPF 30 or higher when outdoors. Concomitant use of Benzaclin with other topical medication, especially with peeling, desquamating, or abrasive agents, may irritate your skin. If such occurs, reduce the frequency of application or temporarily interrupt treatment and resume once irritation subsides. It would be best to discontinue treatment if irritation persists and speak with your doctor.

Before you start using Benzaclin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• History of ulcerative colitis or antibiotic-associated colitis, including pseudomembranous colitis;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Severe bacterial infection of the skin or treated areas

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known if Benzoyl peroxide or Clindamycin will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. It is unknown if Clindamycin or Benzoyl peroxide passes into breast milk or if it may affect a nursing infant. Use Benzaclin precisely as prescribed by your doctor. There may be a drug interaction between Benzaclin and other drugs, such as topical dapsone or Clindamycin and erythromycin-containing creams/lotion.
