Vagifem (Estradiol) Medication Information
Uses
Vagifem is a vaginal estradiol tablet that can be prescribed for treating atrophic vaginitis (vaginal dryness) due to menopause.
As women age, their levels of hormones, like estrogen, decrease. Estrogen contributes to the maintenance of the vaginal environment, so when it decreases due to menopause, atrophic vaginitis can develop.
Vagifem helps to restore previous levels of estrogen to the vagina and treat atrophic vaginitis.
Dosage
Insert 1 tablet into the vagina daily for two weeks, followed by 1 tablet twice weekly for as long as directed by your healthcare provider.
Vagifem is available in 10 mcg and 25 mcg doses.
Side Effects
The most common side effects from Vagifem may include:

Tell your doctor if you have a history of liver problems.
Estrogen replacement can increase the risk of gallbladder disease.

Do not use Vagifem if you have hypersensitivity to any inactive ingredients, including hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, maize starch, and magnesium stearate.
