Zovirax Cream Information

Zovirax (acyclovir) Cream is a prescription medicine that is applied to the skin to treat cold sores that are recurring on the face or lips in adults and children 12 years of age and older, and who have normal immune systems. Zovirax is also used to treat initial genital infections caused by the Herpes simplex virus. Acyclovir is an antiviral drug. It works by killing or stopping the growth of viruses that cause cold sores. This medication may decrease the length of time you have pain and help the sores heal faster. Zovirax does not cure cold sores or prevent the infection from coming back. Also, it does not prevent the spread of infection to others.

Zovirax Cream Side Effects

The most common side effect of Zovirax may include dry or cracked lips, flakiness or dryness of skin, a burning or stinging feeling, or itching of the skin. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Allergic reaction, including rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing;
• Edema and/or pain at the application site

Zovirax Cream Precautions

Do not use Zovirax if you are allergic to acyclovir, valacyclovir, or to any other ingredients in this medication. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history especially if you have a condition where your immune system works less well, and your body is less able to fight infections (e.g. if you have HIV or AIDS). Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Zovirax and other medications. Before you start using Zovirax, tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Consult your doctor or health care professional before using Zovirax in patients younger than 12 years of age or in patients whose immune system is not normal. Avoid unnecessary rubbing of the cold sore because this may cause the cold sore to spread to other areas around your mouth or make your cold sore worse.
