Flamazine Information

Flamazine (Silver Sulfadiazine) is used to treat and prevent infection of skin wounds, specifically for victims of serious burns (Second and third degree). It may also be used to treat leg ulcers, skin grafts, surgical incisions, and minor cuts and scrapes. It might also be used to help remove burnt dead tissue. Silver Sulfadiazine belongs to the class of medication called topical antibiotics. This medication is applied directly to the wound and works by preventing the action of bacteria which causes infection.

Flamazine Side Effects

The common side effects of Flamazine include burning feeling on treated areas, and itching or skin rash.

Contact your doctor immediately if any of these adverse side effects occur:
• Ashen-grey discoloration of the skin;
• Blistering, peeling, or loosening of skin;
• Bloody or cloudy urine;
• Chills or fever;
• Increased sensitivity of skin to sunlight, especially for people with burns on large areas;
• Intense itching of burn wounds;
• Pain at site of application;
• Red skin lesions, often with a purple center;
• Shortness of breath;
• Signs of kidney problems (e.g., decreased urine production, less frequent or painful urination, swelling, fatigue, abdominal pain);
• Sore throat;
• Sores, ulcers, or white spots on lips or in mouth;
• Swollen glands;
• Unusual bleeding or bruising;
• Unusual tiredness or weakness

Flamazine Precautions

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to it and any of its ingredients. Inform your doctor of any other medications you take including prescription medication, over the counter drugs, vitamin supplements and herbal products, to reduce the amount of negative interactions between drugs. Inform your doctor if you specifically take these medications as their interactions can be negative:
• Aminolevulinic Acid;
• Methenamine;
• Methotrexate

Inform your doctor of your medical history especially if you have:
• Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency (a hereditary metabolic disorder affecting red blood cells)—Use with caution. May cause blood problems in patients with this condition;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease—Use with caution. The effects may be increased because of slower removal of the medicine from the body;
• Porphyria—Use of this medicine may result in a severe attack of porphyria.

This medication is not suitable for pregnant women. Inform your doctor if you are or become pregnant. Flamazine will pass into breast milk and will harm a child, consult your physician before breast feeding.
