What is Inderal used for?

Inderal, with the generic name propranolol, is an oral medication indicated to manage hypertension or high blood pressure. This medication may be given as monotherapy or together with other antihypertensive drugs like thiazide diuretics. By lowering high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and kidney problems can be prevented. However, this type of medication should not be used for the management of hypertensive emergencies.

This is available in Inderal 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg, and 80 mg tablets.

How does Inderal work?

This nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist. This works by decreasing cardiac output, inhibiting the release of renin by the kidneys, and curtailment of thoracolumbar outflow from vasomotor centers in the brain. Through this action, heart rate, strain on the heart, and blood pressure will be reduced.

How to use Inderal

To start, read the Inderal guide or information leaflet that comes with this prescription drug. Do not take any antihypertensive agent if you have not yet fully understood the drug information and precautions in the guide provided. If you need additional medical advice or have inquiries regarding the action of this medication, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take the tablet orally. This is usually prescribed two to four times daily. This should be taken prior to meals and at bedtime if prescribed four times daily. After swallowing the pill, take a glass of water. If you need to cut the scored tablets, ask for assistance from a pharmacist.

Remember to take this prescription drug regularly and exactly as prescribed to get the full benefits. To avoid forgetting your medications, make a dosage regimen. If you are prescribed certain cholesterol-lowering agents, such as bile acid-binding resins, take propranolol 1 hour prior or 4 hours after taking these medications.

Do not alter your Inderal dosage as it is based on your medical condition, other medications you are taking, and response to therapy. Also, do not stop taking this drug abruptly or even for a few days to avoid rebound effects or worsening conditions.
