Actonel for Osteoporosis

Actonel improves bone density and treats osteoporosis and related bone diseases. This medication is used for adults who have developed osteoporosis. Among postmenopausal women, it is also used as a treatment for osteoporosis.

Actonel Dosage

Actonel 150mg is a once-a-month treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Actonel 35 mg is available. Follow any instructions or guidelines given to you by your doctor or printed with your prescription. Your dosage amount and schedule will depend on a variety of factors. It is most common to take this medication in the morning with water, 30 minutes before eating.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that occurs when the body is no longer able to produce enough bone cells to sustain a healthy number of bone minerals in skeletal tissues, which is known as bone mineral density. When bones have a density that is too low, it can leave the structure of the bone weak, and it can lead to easy fractures and joint pain.

Osteoporosis is a fairly common post-menopausal condition. Menopause causes a dramatic decrease in the amount of estrogen produced by the body, which has a variety of psychological and physiological effects; one of which being a loss of bone cells. Women who are deemed to be at a risk for osteoporosis following menopause may be given Actonel to preserve healthy bone mineral density. It’s important to visit your doctor often if you have gone through menopause to mitigate the associated risks.

How does it work?

Actonel works by stopping a cell named osteoclasts from working in the body. Osteoclasts are an important part of the body because they are responsible for bone resorption, a process in which bone cells are broken down and absorbed, however, when there is not enough new bone material being produced, bone resorption can cause osteoporosis. By slowing down the work the Osteoclasts do, a balance between bone resorption and new bone production is struck, and bone mineral density can reach a healthy level.

Who should not use this medication?

Actonel is not safe to use for those suffering from Hypocalcemia, a condition in which the concentration of calcium in the bloodstream becomes dangerously low. Hypocalcemia can be caused by a deficiency of vitamin D, an underactive thyroid, and diseases that affect the liver. Actonel can be used after the full treatment of Hypocalcemia is completed and there is no risk present.

If you have a known hypersensitivity to risedronate sodium or any ingredient used to make Actonel, then you should not use this medication. Allergic reactions are life-threatening, and medical assistance is required at the first sign. Symptoms can include rashes, hives, itching, swelling of the face/throat, and difficulty breathing.

Actonel Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Eye pain, redness, or swelling

Actonel vs Fosamax

Fosamax is a similar medication that’s also used to treat osteoporosis. It can similarly be used for treatment and prevention, and helps reduce bone fractures and improves bone density. However, the side effects of Fosamax are different, and there are some people who are unable to take this medication due to a health condition. Not only that, but Actonel prices tend to be cheaper than Fosamax. Consult your doctor to determine which medicine is best for you.

Storage

Keep this medication away from heat and light. Tablets should be stored at room temperature in a closed, dry space. Do not keep it in the refrigerator. Keep away from children and pets.
