Usage

Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of certain psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression). Olanzapine belongs to the class of medications called atypical antipsychotics. It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain. Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Zyprexa may include:
• Back pain, pain in your arms or legs;
• Breast swelling or discharge;
• Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, feeling tired or restless;
• Memory problems;
• Missed menstrual periods;
• Numbness or tingly feeling;
• Stomach pain, constipation, loss of bladder control;
• Weight gain (more likely in teenagers), increased appetite

Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Changes in personality, unusual thoughts or behavior, hallucinations, or thoughts about hurting yourself;
• Dry mouth, thirst, feeling very hot, urinating less than usual or not at all;
• Fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, sores in your mouth and throat;
• High blood sugar (increased thirst, loss of appetite, fruity breath odor, increased urination, drowsiness, dry skin, nausea, and vomiting);
• Sudden numbness or weakness, confusion, or problems with vision, speech or balance;
• Swelling in your hands or feet;
• Trouble speaking or swallowing;
• Twitching or uncontrollable movements of your eyes, lips, tongue, face, arms, or legs;
• Upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
• Very stiff (rigid) muscles, high fever, tremors, sweating, confusion, fast or uneven heartbeats slow heart rate, feeling like you might pass out;

Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position. Do not drink alcohol. Drink plenty of fluids, especially in hot weather and during exercise to avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Olanzapine and other medications. Zyprexa is pregnancy category C and may cause harm to an unborn baby. You must consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding. Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is suitable for use in adults over 13 years of age and should not be given to children under 13 years old.
