Usage

Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir is a combination antiviral medication that prevents human HIV from reproducing in your body. This medication is used to treat HIV, the virus that can cause AIDS. Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. Efavirenz belongs to a class of drugs known as non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). Emtricitabine and tenofovir belong to a class of drugs known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). They work by decreasing the amount of HIV in the body. Although Efavirenz, Emtricitabine, and Tenofovir will not cure HIV, these medications may decrease your chance of developing AIDS and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Use Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Keep using the medication as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir are headache, diarrhea, gas, indigestion, darkening of skin color, especially on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet, pale skin, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, confusion, forgetfulness, feeling agitated, worried, or nervous, abnormally happy mood, unusual dreams, joint or back pain, itching.

Stop using Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Bone fractures, muscle pain or weakness;
• Decreased urination, increased thirst;
• Difficulty swallowing or breathing;
• Extreme tiredness;
• Flu-like symptoms;
• Hoarseness;
• Nausea;
• Numbness, burning, or tingling in the hands, arms, feet, or legs;
• Ongoing or worsening bone pain;
• Pain in the in the arms, hands, feet, or legs;
• Peeling, blistering, or shedding skin;
• Rash;
• Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, legs, ankles, or feet;
• Seizures;
• Urinating large amounts;
• unusual thoughts or behavior, anger, severe depression, thoughts of hurting yourself or others, hallucinations;
• Vomiting;
• Weakness; muscle pain; shortness of breath or fast breathing; stomach pain with nausea and vomiting; cold or blue hands and feet; feeling dizzy or lightheaded; or fast or irregular heartbeat;
• Yellowing of skin or eyes; light-colored bowel movements; dark yellow or brown urine; loss of appetite; pain in upper right part of stomach; or unusual bleeding or bruising

Warnings and Interactions

To make sure Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: liver or kidney disease; long QT syndrome; mental illness, use of antipsychotic medication, or injection drug use; epilepsy or other seizure disorder; low bone mineral density, hepatitis B or C infection. You should not take Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir if you are allergic to Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir or any other ingredients of this medicine. You may develop lactic acidosis, a dangerous build-up of lactic acid in your blood. This may be more likely if you have other medical conditions, if you've taken HIV medication for a long time, or if you are a woman. Ask your doctor about your risk.

Before taking Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir, tell your doctor about all medicines you have used within the past 5 weeks. The following drugs should not be used while you are taking Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir:
• An antibiotic or antifungal medicine;
• An antidepressant;
• Any other HIV medicines;
• Cholesterol medication;
• Heart or blood pressure medication;
• Medicine to prevent organ transplant rejection;
• Medicine to treat hepatitis;
• Seizure medicine;
• St. John's wort;
• Tuberculosis medication

Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir can harm your kidneys, especially if you also use certain medicines for infections, cancer, osteoporosis, organ transplant rejection, bowel disorders, high blood pressure, or pain or arthritis (including Advil, Motrin, and Aleve). Do not use if you are pregnant, and do not get pregnant for at least 12 weeks after you stop taking Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir. Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir can cause birth defects. Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir can make hormonal birth control less effective, including birth control pills, injections, implants, skin patches, and vaginal rings. To prevent pregnancy while using Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir, use a barrier form of birth control: condom, diaphragm, cervical cap, or contraceptive sponge. Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir is for use in adults and children who are at least 12 years old and weigh at least 88 pounds (40 kilograms).
