What is Bricanyl used for?

Bricanyl or terbutaline is a medicine that is used to dilate muscles in the airways. It is a bronchodilator, therefore, and is helpful to people who suffer from diseases that cause breathing difficulties. Recommended for those with bronchitis, asthma or emphysema, Bricanyl can prevent or treat bronchospasm. It is characterized by chest tightness, wheezing and breathing difficulties. By opening air passages, Bricanyl improves breathing. Being a beta adrenergic receptor agonist, terbutaline gets rid of anything that is blocking the airways.

This can be swelling of the airways, a mucus buildup or muscles spasm (bronchospasm). Once the airway gets narrower, wheezing, breathing difficulties and cough can occur. Since Bricanyl is a bronchodilator, it is able to widen the air passages that have become narrow.  It attaches itself to beta adrenergic receptors on the muscles that are close to the air passages. So the muscles begin to relax and widen the passages.

Needless to say, wide air passages enable air to circulate freely in the lungs and this improves breathing.

Dosage

A bronchospasm problem caused by bronchitis, asthma or emphysema should be treated with a dose of 2.5mg to 5mg three to four times a day. This adult dose should be taken every six hours, approximately. The largest amount you can take per day is 15mg. The advised subcutaneous or under skin dosage is 0.25mg each fifteen to thirty minutes for 2 doses. Do not take more than 0.5mg in four hours.

If taken as an inhaler, two inhalations every four to six hours are fine. When used to stop preterm labor, then the right dosage is 2.5mcg to 10mcg per minute through intravenous infusion. The amount should be increased every ten to twenty minutes. Usually, a dose of 17.5mcg to 30mcg per minute will be effective to stop preterm labor and treatment should not go beyond three days.

Always follow your doctor’s prescription guidelines properly to avoid skipping doses or taking them incorrectly. Take your Bricanyl medicine with or without food. If using other asthma medicines, update your doctor.
