Qualaquin (Quinine Sulfate) is a prescription medication used to treat malaria, a disease caused by parasites. This medication is also used by older patients for leg cramps. Malaria parasites can enter the body through mosquito bites, and then live in body tissues such as red blood cells or the liver. For leg cramps, Quinine helps by decreasing the excitability of the motor end-plate and increases the muscle refractory period. Quinine belongs to a class of drugs known as antimalarials. It works by attacking the parasites once they have entered the red blood cells. This medication kills the parasites and prevents them from multiplying further. Quinine Sulfate does not prevent malaria.
