Dosage

Amoxicillin is available in the strength of 250 mg and 500 mg oral capsules and 250 mg/5 ml/100 ml and 250 mg/5 ml/150 ml powder for suspension. Amoxicillin 250 mg is also available as chewable tablets.

Usage

Amoxil (Amoxicillin) is a prescription penicillin antibiotic medication used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections such as tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, infections of the ear, nose, throat, skin or urinary tract. It is also used to treat dental abscesses and it is sometimes combined with Clarithromycin (Biaxin Canada) to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. Amoxicillin works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This medication is only used to treat bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections such as the common cold and flu. Amoxil starts working on the bacteria causing the infection immediately, but you will not feel better right away. It may take up four to five days before your symptoms improve. Take Amoxil exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not share your antibiotics with others and do not save them for later.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Amoxicillin include abnormal taste sense, diarrhea, headache, skin rash, upset stomach, and vaginal yeast infection. It is rare but Amoxil can cause liver damage. Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Dark urine;
• Easy bruising or bleeding;
• Persistent nausea or vomiting;
• Persistent sore throat or fever;
• Stomach pain;
• Yellowing eyes or skin

Amoxil may also cause a rare but severe intestinal infection called C. difficile. Let your doctor know if you experience the following symptoms:
• Watery, bloody diarrhea even if it happens months after your last dose;
• Blood or mucus in your stool;
• Stomach pain or cramp

Warnings and Interactions

Signs of Amoxil allergy: difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

You should not take Amoxil if you are allergic to amoxicillin or to any penicillin antibiotic such as ampicillin, ticarcillin, dicloxacillin, oxacillin. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have:
• Asthma;
• Diarrhea caused by taking antibiotics;
• Food or drug allergies, especially to other antibiotics such as Omnicef, Cefzil, and Feflex;
• Liver or Kidney disease;
• Mononucleosis, commonly known as “mono”

You should also inform your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC and herbal medications especially:
• Any other antibiotics;
• Allopurinol;
• A blood thinner (warfarin, coumadin, Jantoven);
• Probenecid

Avoid dairy products such as milk, butter, yoghurt and cheese for at least three hours after taking Amoxil. Grapefruit juice and supplements that contain minerals like calcium may also affect how Amoxil works. Amoxicillin may cause live bacterial vaccines to not work as well. Do not use an antibiotic when it is not needed, as that can cause it to not work for future infections. Amoxicillin can make birth control pills less effective. Use non-hormonal birth control to prevent pregnancy. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
