Product Details
Sporanox (Itraconazole) is used for the treatment of infections caused by fungus, which can invade any part of the body including the lungs, mouth, or throat, toenails, or fingernails. Itraconazole belongs to the family of medications called antifungals. This medication works by preventing the fungus from growing. Some examples for fungal infections include yellow toenails, athlete’s foot and thrush of the mouth or genitals. If your doctor has prescribed Sporanox, it is important that you complete the full course of medication to avoid a relapse of the infection.

The common side effects may include constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, mild stomach pain, headache, mild itching or skin rash, runny nose or other cold symptoms. The serious side effects may include:
• Feeling short of breath, fever;
• Hearing problems;
• Loss of appetite;
• Numbness or tingling feeling;
• Rapid weight gain;
• Severe back or stomach pain

You should not take Sporanox if you are allergic to Itraconazole or if you take Fluconazole, Ketoconazole. Before you start taking this medication, inform your doctor about the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. Sporanox will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. Avoid taking antacids or stomach acid reducers within one hour before or two hours after you take Sporanox. It is unknown whether Sporanox will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication. Itraconazole passes into breast milk and can harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without informing your doctor if you breast-feeding a baby.

Questions and Answers

1. What is Sporanox used for in dogs and cats?
Answer: Sporanox for pets contains itraconazole, an antifungal agent. Sporanox is most commonly used to treat ringworm infections affecting the skin, but is also effective against a variety of other fungal infections such as aspergillosis. This is reviewed by Dr Pippa Elliott, BVMS MRCVS.

2. Is Sporanox safe for dogs?
Answer: Sporanox for dogs is safe when given to healthy animals at the correct dosage. However, Sporanox for fungal infections should be avoided in dogs with liver disease or pregnant animals. Also, Sporanox can inter-react with other medications (such as heart and anti-seizure medications) and should only ever be given under veterinary direction. This is reviewed by Dr Pippa Elliott, BVMS MRCVS.

3. How long does Sporanox take to work in dogs?
Answer: Sporanox for dogs is a medication that works slowly and requires a long course (around 4 to 20 weeks on average), depending on how severe the infection is and which fungal agent is causing the infection. This is reviewed by Dr Pippa Elliott, BVMS MRCVS.

4. Can I take Zantac while I am taking this medication?
Answer: You should avoid taking Zantac within one hour before or two hours after you take Sporanox because this medication can make it harder for your body to absorb Sporanox.

5. What is the recommended dose for Sporanox?
Answer: The recommended adult dose of Itraconazole is 100mg once daily after a full meal to 200mg twice daily after meals, depending on the condition being treated.
