Arixtra is used to prevent blood clots in patients who will be having certain types of surgery. Arixtra may also be combined with warfarin to treat blood clots in the leg or lungs. Keep at 77 degrees Fahrenheit and protect from heat, moisture, and light. Always follow your doctor’s directions when taking Arixtra. Arixtra is generally given as an injection at your doctor’s office, hospital, or clinic. Do not use Arixtra if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the syringe is cracked or damaged. Use a different injection site every day. Avoid using Arixtra if you are allergic to any ingredient in the medication; you have severe kidney problems, inflammation of the heart due to a bacterial infection, active major bleeding, or severe bleeding problems; you have a low platelet count and the presence of antiplatelet antibodies; you weigh less than 110 pounds and are using Arixtra to treat a blood clot in the leg or lungs; or you weigh less than 110 pounds and will be receiving a hip or knee replacement or abdominal surgery, or you have had a hip fracture. Before you being taking Arixtra, let your doctor know of any medical conditions you may have, especially if: you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or are breast-feeding; you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; you have allergies to medicines foods, or other substances; you have a history of kidney problems, liver problems, stomach or intestinal problems, stroke, or vision problems cause by diabetes; you have a bleeding disorder, a history of bleeding or blood conditions, severe, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or low body weight; you have recently had or are scheduled to have brain, spine, or eye surgery, an epidural catheter, or a spinal puncture; or you are taking medicines that affect platelets.Arixtra may reduce the number of clot-forming cells in your blood. Try to avoid any activities that could cause bruising or injury. Let your doctor know if you have any unusual bruising or bleeding. Let your doctor know if you have dark, tarry, or bloody stools. Let your dentist or doctor know you are taking Arixtra before having a dental procedure, emergency care, or surgery. Before you begin taking any new prescription or nonprescription medicine, check to see if it contains ibuprofen or aspirin. Let your doctor or lab personnel know if you are taking Arixtra, as it may interfere with certain test results. Use Arixtra with caution in the elderly as this age group may be more sensitive to the medications effects. Arixtra should be used with extreme caution in children as its safety and effectiveness have not yet been confirmed for this age group. Discuss the potential risks and benefits of taking Arixtra while pregnant. It is not know if Arixtra is able to pass into the breast milk. Discuss the risks of breast-feeding while taking Arixtra. Severe side effects may include: severe allergic reaction; bloody, black, tarry stools; confusion; difficulty walking; fainting; fever; increased drainage or oozing from a wound; loss of appetite; nosebleed; one-sided weakness; pale skin; pink or red urinLess severe side effects may include: mild bleeding, irritation, rash, or itching at the injection site; or trouble sleeping.
