Indications

Peridex is a dental rinse used to treat gingivitis between visits to the dentist.

Chlorhexidine gluconate is a cationic molecule that kills bacteria and removes plaque when rinsed in the mouth to help treat gingivitis and issues in the root canal system. Peridex also improves painful and irritating symptoms of gingivitis by inhibiting signs of inflammation in your gums.

This antimicrobial mouthwash has been found equally as effective at killing bacteria than sodium hypochlorite but is much less toxic. Peridex has also proven effective against resistant bacterial strains and can improve conditions in the root canal such as gingivitis even without mechanical hygiene.

Uses and Dosage

The prescribed and instructed usage of Peridex will vary depending on the individual and severity of the condition being treated. Follow all your dentist’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully to achieve the best results.

  • After brushing your teeth in the morning and night, rinse your mouth with Peridex
  • Measure your dose using the provided cup
  • Most adults use 15ml twice daily
  • Swish the medicine in your mouth for at least 30 seconds
  • Do not swallow this Peridex solution, spit it out after rinsing it around your mouth
  • Do not rinse your mouth with water right after using this mouthwash
  • Peridex may leave an unpleasant taste but rinsing with water can remove the medicine and reduce its efficacy.
  • Use Peridex for the entire length of time prescribed, even if symptoms improve
  • Visit your dentist regularly for preventative care
  • Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat
  • Do not let this solution freeze

Cautions

Do not swallow Peridex after rinsing your mouth. Swallowing this medicated mouthwash could result in an overdose. Symptoms of a chlorhexidine overdose include nausea, stomach pain, and the appearance of being drunk.

Avoid eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth immediately after using this medication. Doing any of these activities could rinse away the chlorhexidine and reduce its effectiveness at killing bacteria on your teeth and in your mouth.

Do not use any other mouthwash unless directed to do so by your dentist.

Do not give Peridex to a child or teenager without having consulted a dentist and following their directions. This mouthwash could result in severe irritation or chemical burns when used in young children.

You may require special treatment when using Peridex if you have periodontal disease. Consult with your doctor to determine an effective, personalized treatment.

Peridex may cause your teeth to stain as well as dentures, tooth restorations, your tongue, or the inside of you mouth. Speak with your dentist to learn ways to remove staining.

Chlorhexidine gluconate’s effects on unborn babies are unknown. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using Peridex to help ensure the safety of you and your baby.

FAQ

Should I rinse with water after using Peridex?

No, after rinsing the liquid formula around your mouth for at least thirty seconds, you should spit out the Peridex and then avoid rinsing, eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth right away. This is because rinsing could remove the medication and reduce its efficacy at killing bacteria in your mouth.

Should I brush my teeth before using Peridex?

Yes, Peridex is designed to be used twice a day after brushing your teeth in the morning and night. You should make sure that you brush before using the mouthwash because using it afterwards could reduce the efficacy of chlorhexidine by rinsing it away.
