Description

Generic Name: benzonatate

Drug Class: antitussive

Tessalon Perles Indications

Tessalon Perles is an oral prescription drug used for the symptomatic relief of cough among adults and children 10 years of age and above. It treats coughs that are caused by common colds and breathing problems, including asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, and emphysema.

Tessalon Perles Dosage Forms

This is available in Tessalon Perles 100 mg and 200 mg capsules.

Tessalon Perles Mechanism of Action

This acts as a local anesthetic that works by anesthetizing and lessening the activity of the vagal stretch receptors or the nerve fibers located in the respiratory passageway, pleura, and lungs. When the vagal stretch receptors are stimulated, they send an impulse to the cough center in the medulla. This leads to the inhibition of cough production and cough reflex activity.

How to Take Tessalon Perles

Before you start treatment with the Tessalon Perles capsule, it is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. Unless you fully understand how any medication should be used, you should not take it. If you need additional medical advice or information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

This capsule is usually prescribed three times a day and can be taken with or without a meal. After you swallow the tablet, drink fluids right away. Avoid chewing or sucking this medication because it may cause loss of feeling in the mouth and throat or cause choking.

Schedule a dosing schedule, so you don’t miss your dose. Do not increase or decrease your Tessalon Perles dose. It is also advisable not to take this oral drug more frequently than prescribed.
