Usage

Protonix (Pantoprazole) is a prescription medication used to treat erosive esophagitis caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD in adults and children who are at least 5 years old. It is also used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions that involve excess stomach acid. This medication relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. Pantoprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Pantoprazole works by decreasing the amount of acid made by the stomach. In addition, Protonix helps to heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus. As a result, this medication helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent esophagus cancer.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Protonix include diarrhea, dizziness, headache, gas, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and stomachache. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Dizziness, fast or irregular heart rate;
• New or worsening symptoms of lupus;
• Rapid weight gain, swelling;
• Severe stomach pain or diarrhea that is bloody or watery;
• Sudden pain or trouble with body movement;
• Urinating less than usual, blood in the urine

You should not take Protonix if you:
• Are allergic to Pantoprazole or to other PPIs (esomeprazole, lansoprazole, omeprazole, etc);

Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history especially if you have ever had:
• Low levels of magnesium in the blood;
• Severe liver disease;
• Osteoporosis or low bone mineral density

Protonix is not used for the immediate relief of heartburn symptoms. Heartburn can be confused with symptoms of a heart attack, seek emergency medical help if you have any symptoms of a heart attack. Long-term treatment of Pantoprazole may make it harder for your body to absorb vitamin B-12. Tell your doctor if you have concerns about a vitamin B-12 deficiency. This medication can also cause kidney problems or new or worsening symptoms of lupus, talk to your doctor if you have any concerns. If you are more than 50 years old, and you are on high doses of this medication, or use it for over one year, you should inform your doctor right away if you have bone pain or you are unable to move normally. The reason is that Protonix increases your risk of fractures. Tell your doctor about all the medications your take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Pantoprazole and other medications especially a diuretic or water pill, blood thinners, digoxin, HIV medications, Methotrexate, etc. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Protonix is not approved for use by anyone younger than 5 years old.
