The active ingredient in the Tobrex eye drop is Tobramycin. Tobramycin belongs to the class of medications called aminoglycoside antibiotics (ophthalmic). It works by killing the bacteria causing eye infections. Tobrex should not be used to treat fungal or viral infections.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Tobrex are continuous tearing or lacrimation, burning or stinging of the eyes, redness, itching, swelling, and eye irritation.

Stop using Tobrex and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Allergic reactions like rash, itching, swelling, redness, or hives;
• Blurred vision;
• Eye burning;
• Eye pain;
• Eyelid swelling;

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Tobrex if allergic to Tobramycin or other aminoglycoside antibiotics. Do not use Tobrex if the safety seal around the eye drop's bottleneck area is broken or if the expiry date on the bottle or tube has passed. Inform your doctor if you wear soft contact lenses. You should not wear contact lenses if you have any eye infection. You should apply this eye drop as demonstrated by your doctor.

When instilling your drops or ointment, follow the following precautions. You may find it easier to put the drops in your eye while sitting or lying down:
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water;
• Break the safety seal around the bottle's neck area;
• Remove the cap from the bottle;
• Hold the bottle on one hand upside down between your thumb and middle finger;
• Place the tip of the bottle close to your eye. Do not let the bottle touch your eye;
• Place the dropper tip close to your lower eyelid and gently tap or press the base of the bottle with your forefinger, releasing a drop. Do not let the bottle touch your eyelid, and do not squeeze the bottle;
• Close your eye. Do not blink or rub;
• While your eye is closed, place your index finger against the inside corner of your eye and press against your nose for about two minutes;
• Rewash your hand with soap and water to remove any residue

Wait for 5 minutes before putting any other eye drops or ointment in your eye. Wait 15-30 minutes before replacing contact lenses. Be careful driving or operating machinery until you know how Tobrex affects you and your vision. If blurred vision occurs when you put the drops, wait until your vision is clear before returning to any activities. Do not drive a car or operate machinery if you are unable to see clearly.
