Usage

Kayexalate (Sodium Polysteryrene Sulfonate) is a prescription medicine used to treat Hyperkalemia (high potassium level) in the blood. It is a condition in which the potassium level in the blood is greater than 5 mmol/L. The active ingredient in Kayexalate is Sodium polystyrene sulfonate. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate belongs to the group of medications called potassium binders. It works by removing extra potassium by binding to potassium in the intestine. Treating Hyperkalemia prevents complications such as abnormal heart rhythm or sudden death that may occur.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Kayexalate are nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Stop using Kayexalate and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Irregular heartbeat or palpitation;
• Muscle spasm;
• Severe abdominal pain or swelling;
• Severe constipation

Warnings and Interactions

Before using sodium polystyrene sulfonate, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Kayexalate comes as oral suspension and powder. Shake the bottle well before using it. Mix the powder with clean water and swallow it, usually 1 to 4 times daily. Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring spoon or use the prescribed number of pre-measured bottles of suspension. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose. Using more than your prescribed dose may tilt you into severe hypokalemia, which may be fatal. Do not use potassium supplements or food containing potassium without discussing it with your doctor. If you notice a sudden change in your heartbeat, do not hesitate to contact your doctor immediately.

Before you start using Kayexalate, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Intestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction, and ulcers;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Treating depression or psychotic disorder

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of Kayexalate medication. Sodium Polysteryrene Sulfonate does not pass into breast milk and is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding, and do not give this medication to children. There may be a drug interaction between Kayexalate and other drugs, such as meloxicam, sorbitol, and antacids that contain aluminum, calcium, and magnesium. Store your medication at room temperature, protect it from freezing, and keep it out of the reach of children.
