Fosamax is a drug used to treat osteoporosis in both men and women, caused either by the menopause or by the use of steroids. The active ingredient in this medication is alendronate which belongs to the group of drugs called bisphosphonates. It works by affecting the bone formation cycle. It increases bone mass while also decreasing bone loss, thus reducing the risk of fractures and breaking bones. It is also used to treat Paget’s disease. Side Effects

The possible side effects include:
• Dizziness, pain in the eyes, headache;
• Mild heartburn, bloating, diarrhea, gas, constipation;
• Mild nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and joint pain;
• Swelling in the hands or feet;

More serious side effects may include:
• Chest pain, severe heartburn or stomach pain;
• Difficulty swallowing, burning in the ribs or back, muscle or bone pain, pain in thighs;
