Pradaxa

What is Pradaxa?

Pradaxa (generic: dabigatran etexilate mesylate) is an oral medication used to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism or blood clots among patients with atrial fibrillation. It is also used to treat and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

This oral direct thrombin inhibitor works by inhibiting the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin and preventing the development of thrombus. This drug is available in Pradaxa 150 mg and 75 mg capsules.

How to use Pradaxa

To begin, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this drug. Never take this medication unless you have fully understood all the information and instructions in the guide. If you need further medical advice or have further queries, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take Pradaxa orally. You may take it with or without a meal or as directed by your physician. If you experience stomach upset, take Pradaxa with food. Swallow it whole and take it with a glass of water. Do not open or chew the medicine because this will cause your body to absorb the active ingredient all at once, thus, increasing the risk of bleeding.

Remember to take this medication regularly and with a dosing schedule. It is crucial to take it exactly as directed. Do not alter your dosage because this depends on your medical condition, response to treatment, kidney function, and other medications you are taking.

This is not a full or complete list of side effects.

Precautions

Before taking this oral medication, disclose your full medical history to your doctor, especially recent major injury or surgery, heart disease, bleeding problems, blood disorders, liver disease, kidney problems, antiphospholipid syndrome, and stroke. Some diseases or disorders may impact how your body will respond to treatment. In addition, talk about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and supplements you are taking. These medications may have drug interactions with this anticoagulant.

It is highly important to look out for Pradaxa allergy when taking this medication. Do not take this drug if you have a known allergy to dabigatran or any inactive medications that this medication may contain. Discontinue medication and seek emergency help when you begin to develop signs of a hypersensitivity reaction, such as swelling of the face, severe dizziness, itching, breathing difficulty, and skin rashes.

This oral drug increases the risk of heavy bleeding. Practice caution when using sharp objects like razors, knives, and nail cutters, among others. Try to avoid contact sports or any activities that could also cause bruising and bleeding. Moreover, avoid intramuscular injections as much as possible.

Limit alcoholic beverages or any carbonated drinks. This is to reduce the risk of possible stomach bleeding.

If pregnant or breastfeeding, use this anticoagulant only if extremely needed. Remember that potential benefits should outweigh potential risks.
