Indications

Xigduo is a diabetes medication used to lower and control your blood sugar levels to treat adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This medication also lowers your risk of kidney disease or death due to heart problems as well as your risk of becoming hospitalized for heart failure for patients with both type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

This medicine combines dapagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, with metformin, a biguanide. Dapagliflozin reduces glucose reabsorption and increases the amount of glucose that is excreted in your urine. Metformin improves your blood sugar tolerance while reducing the amount of glucose that is absorbed by your intestines and that is produced by your liver.

Thanks to these actions, Xigduo XR helps lower and maintain your blood sugar levels to improve your type 2 diabetes condition, especially when taken alongside a treatment program including diet and exercise.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Xigduo XR that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual being treated. Follow all your healthcare provider’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully to ensure the best results during treatment. Do not change your dose or suddenly stop taking this medication.

  • Swallow tablet whole, do not crush or chew
  • Take with food at the same time each day
  • You may need to adjust your dose if you are under stress including fever, trauma, infection, or surgery
  • Ensure that you follow your prescribed diet and exercise program during treatment
  • Continue taking Xigduo as prescribed, even if you feel well
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

To treat type 2 diabetes mellitus:

  • Adults previously taking metformin at night should skip their last dose before starting Xigduo
  • Patients not already taking dapagliflozin should start by taking 5mg once daily
  • Doses can increase gradually as needed and tolerated
  • Adults should not take more than 10mg of dapagliflozin and 2000mg of metformin

To prevent heart failure and kidney disease:

  • Most adults are recommended to take 10mg of dapagliflozin once daily
  • Do not take more than 10mg dapagliflozin and 2000mg metformin
