Product Details

Xeomin (IncobotulinumtoxinA) also called botulinum toxin type A is a prescription medication that is used to treat cervical dystonia. This medication is also used to treat muscle spasms in the arms. Botulinum toxin type A is made from the bacteria that cause botulism. It works by blocking nerve activity in the muscles, causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Xeomin is the only botulinum toxin type A that does not require refrigeration prior to reconstitution. Xeomin is also used to lessen the appearance of facial wrinkles between the eyebrows and for upper limb spasticity in adults.

The common side effects may include diarrhea, dry eyes, eyelid swelling or bruising, blinking less than usual, headache or tired feeling, pain or redness or swelling at the injection site and neck pain.

The serious side effects may include:

• Blurred or double vision;
• Eye pain or irritation;
• Feeling like you might pass out;
• Hoarse voice, drooping eyelids;
• Loss of strength or loss of bladder control;
• Severe skin rash or itching;
• Trouble breathing, talking or swallowing;
• Unusual or severe muscle weakness;
• Wheezing or tightness in your chest

You should not use Xeomin if you are allergic to Botulinum toxin or if you have any other allergies.

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications.

This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. It is unknown if Xeomin passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before you breast-feed a baby.

Precautions

Xeomin is injected into a muscle or gland by a healthcare provider. It is administered once every 12-16 weeks and should be spaced at a minimum, 3 months apart. This medication should only be administered by a trained professional.

Follow your doctor’s advice on needing eyedrops, ointment, or special contact lenses if receiving these injections for eye muscle conditions.

Do not seek to have botulinum toxin injections from more than one professional at a time. If you do switch providers, be sure to tell them the last time you received an injection.

The botulinum toxin contained in Xeomn can spread to other parts of the body than were it was injected. If this happens, it can cause serious life-threatening side effects. Talk to your doctor if you’re concerned this has happened.

There may be an interaction between Botulinum and other medications such as warfarin, chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, tetracyclines, etc. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Xeomin.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• A breathing disorder
• ALS or “Lou Gehrig’s disease”
• Bleeding problems
• Changes in the normal appearance of your face
• Facial muscle weakness
• Heart disease
• Lambert-Eaton syndrome
• Myasthenia gravis
• Other botulinum toxin injections (Botox, Dysport, Myobloc)
• Problems swallowing

This medication is not approved for anyone younger than 18 years old.

Questions and Answers

1. I received Xeomin to help with neck spasms, but it hasn’t helped yet. What should I do?
Answer: It can take up to a full week for the injection to improve neck muscle spasm conditions. If it has been less than 7 days, give it a bit more time. If it’s been over a week, talk to your doctor to find out if there are other options.

2. What should I avoid after getting my Xeomin injection?
Answer: Avoid heading straight back into your normal physical activities until you know how your injection has affected you. It can impair your vision or depth perception. So, with that said, avoid driving or other hazardous activities until you feel like you’re back to normal.

3. How long do the effects of Xeomin last?
Answer: The effects of Xeomin are temporary, only lasting approximately 3 months after injection. However, if you receive multiple repeat injections, it make take less and less time for symptoms to return. This is because your body will develop antibodies to the botulinum toxin. Talk to your doctor about the right course of action for you.
