What is Qvar Inhaler?

Qvar, also known as beclomethasone dipropionate, is an oral inhalation used as a maintenance treatment for asthma as well as preventative therapy in patients aged 5 and above. It prevents and controls symptoms, such as shortness of breath and wheezing. However, this drug does not work immediately and should not be used to treat sudden breathing problems or asthma attacks.

This corticosteroid is thought to inhibit inflammatory cells and the release of inflammatory mediators. Qvar Inhaler works directly into the lungs. It makes breathing easier by reducing the irritation and inflammation in the airway. It has both topical anti-inflammatory effects and systemic effects.

This is available in Qvar Inhaler 100 mcg/actuation (equivalent to 80 mcg) and 50mcg/ actuation (equivalent to 40 mcg).

How to use Qvar Inhaler

To initiate, read the medication guide and information leaflet that comes with this product. Avoid using a Qvar inhaler if you have not yet fully understood the drug information and directions written in the guide. If you have further inquiries on how to use this corticosteroid inhaler or need more medical advice, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Remember to use this prescription medication regularly and exactly as directed. Make a dosing schedule to avoid missing your doses. If you are prescribed with other inhalations, remember that there must be a one-minute interval between each medication, and you should use this corticosteroid last.

Do not alter your Qvar Inhaler dosage because it will depend on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. Also, you should not stop using this drug abruptly or even for a short time to avoid worsening conditions or withdrawal symptoms. Nausea, weakness, headache, tiredness, weight loss, and muscle pain are among the symptoms of Qvar Inhaler withdrawal.

Step by step guide in using Qvar Inhaler:

  1. Open the inhaler by removing the cap from the mouthpiece. Then, make sure that the canister is inserted correctly into the device or actuator.
  2. To prime, the inhaler, check the black dot in the dose counter. Hold the inhaler in a vertical or upright position, with the mouthpiece facing you. Press the canister twice to release two actuations in the air. After this, the dose counter will read “120” which means that the inhaler is ready to use.
  3. Exhale fully and deeply.
  4. Place the mouthpiece into your mouth, still erect, and seal your lips around it.
  5. Breathe in slowly and deeply while you fully press the canister into the actuator.
  6. Hold your breath for 5 to 10 seconds.
  7. Pull the metal canister from your mouth and remove the inhaler. Then, exhale gently.
  8. If you need to take two puffs, repeat steps 4-7.
  9. Once you are done, put the cap of the mouthpiece back on.
