Keppra Uses

Keppra (generic name: levetiracetam) is an oral medication indicated to treat partial-onset seizures in patients with epilepsy. It also helps in myoclonic seizures among patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. Lastly, it can address primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy. This is usually used as an adjunctive therapy.

This is available in 1000 mg, 750 mg, 500 mg, and 250 mg film-coated tablets.

Keppra Mechanism of Action

This oral anticonvulsant modulates the synaptic neurotransmitter release by binding to the synaptic vesicle protein SV2A in the brain. SV2A is a protein found on synaptic vesicles and plays a role in vesicle exocytosis. It also modulates synaptic transmission by increasing the number of secretory vesicles available for neurotransmission. The correlation between SV2A affinity and anti-epileptic potency is thought to contribute to the antiepileptic effect of this drug,
