Canasa Suppositories (Generic name: Mesalamine) is an approved medication used to treat active ulcerative proctitis, a type of bowel disease. It does not cure ulcerative proctitis, but it may decrease the number of stools, the amount of mucus/blood in the stools, and the rectal bleeding caused by irritation/swelling of the colon/rectum. The active ingredient in Canasa Suppositories, is Mesalamine, also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), and is classified as an anti-inflammatory drug. Mesalamine works inside the bowel by helping to reduce inflammation and other symptoms. Canasa Suppositories may also be used to treat Crohn's disease. Take Canasa Suppositories exactly as it was prescribed for you.
The most common Canasa Suppositories side effects are diarrhea, dizziness, gas, hair loss, headache, nausea, or stomach pain.
