Amaryl (Glimepiride) is a prescription medication that helps with controlling blood sugar levels. This medication is an adjunct to proper diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to a class of drugs called sulfonylureas, which works by causing the pancreas to increase insulin production. This medication is not for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness, as this medication causes you to experience dizziness, drowsiness, or blurry vision due to extremely low or high blood sugar. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. Avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) intake to avoid worsening these side effects.

Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking this medication to avoid the risk of developing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Amaryl may lead to increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid prolonged contact with sunlight, tanning booths, and sunlamps. When going outside, remember to use sunscreen and wear protective gear. Inform your healthcare provider if you get sunburned or develop skin blisters.

This medication is not recommended for patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a condition where the body breaks down fat too fast.

Take care not to let your blood sugar go extremely low. Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar can occur if you skip meals, exercise for too long, drink too much alcohol, or if you are under stress. Always carry hard candy, glucose tablets, or sugar in any form with you if you start to experience symptoms of low blood sugar.

Before undergoing surgery, make sure the doctor is aware that you are taking Amaryl.

Before undergoing a dental procedure, make sure the dentist is aware that you are taking Amaryl.
