Armour Thyroid (Thyroid) Medication Information

Uses

Armour thyroid is a type of desiccated thyroid hormone prescribed to treat hypothyroidism (thyroid hormone deficiency).

Desiccated thyroid hormone is produced by drying and crushing porcine thyroid glands. In contrast to synthetic thyroid hormone, it contains a mixture of two thyroid hormones T3 and T4. Armour thyroid contains 38 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3 per grain of desiccated thyroid.

Much of the circulating T4 is converted into T3 in the bloodstream.

Inactive ingredients include calcium stearate, dextrose, microcrystalline cellulose, opadry white, and sodium starch glycolate.

Dosage

The dosage of Armour thyroid is different for each individual. It can vary from 15 mg per day to 195 mg per day.

The starting dose is 30 mg per day and can be increased by 15 mg every two to three weeks until adequate thyroid replacement.

Most people experience a therapeutic effect at doses from 60 to 130 mg per day.

Side Effects

Armour thyroid replaces a hormone that occurs naturally, so side effects are rare except in the case of overdose. If you experience side effects while taking Armour Thyroid, tell your doctor. It might be a sign that the dose is too high.

Symptoms of too much thyroid hormone include:

  • Alopecia
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Ataxia
  • Cardiac arrhythmia
  • Chest pain
  • Constipation
  • Diaphoresis
  • Diarrhea
  • Dyspnea
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Heat intolerance
  • insomnia
  • Increased appetite
  • Menstrual disease
  • Myalgia
  • Nervousness
  • Palpitation
  • Tachycardia
  • Tremor
  • Tremor of hands
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss

Precautions

Thyroid hormones are ineffective for weight loss in people with normal thyroid function. Increased doses may cause thyroid toxicity.

If you are taking medications for diabetes, they may need to be adjusted when your dose of thyroid changes.

Interactions

Armour thyroid can interact with many different medications. Your doctor will regularly monitor your thyroid levels to ensure you are taking the correct dose.

Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medications:

  • Amiodarone
  • Bile acid sequestrants
  • Calcium polystyrene sulfonate
  • Calcium salts
  • Carbamazepine
  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Digoxin
  • Estrogen derivatives
  • Fosphenytoin
  • Furosemide
  • Growth hormone analogs
  • Lanthanum
  • Phenytoin
  • Piracetam
  • Rifampin
  • Ritonavir
  • SSRIs
  • Theophylline
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Warfarin

Storage

Store Armour thyroid in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Do not store it in rooms with a lot of moisture like the bathroom or kitchen.

Pharmacist Tips

  • Take Armour thyroid on an empty stomach 30 minutes before the first meal of the day. It can be taken with water, but should not be taken with coffee or tea.
  • After you are on the right dose, you should have your thyroid measured at least once every year.
  • Armour thyroid is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Armour Thyroid FAQs

How long do I need to take Armour Thyroid?

Treatment is typically lifelong. When someone develops hypothyroidism, their thyroid is unable to keep up with the hormone demands of their body.

What are the common symptoms of too much thyroid?

Tell your doctor if you have chest pain, faster heart rate, palpitations (you can feel your heartbeat), excessive sweating, heat intolerance, or nervousness.

How do I know I am taking enough thyroid hormone?

Your doctor will measure thyroid levels, most commonly a test called TSH. The TSH levels tell your doctor if your thyroid levels are in the normal range or not.
