Description

Generic Name: Valsartan

Drug Class: angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB)

Indications

Diovan is an oral prescription drug used to treat hypertension and heart failure. It is also prescribed to reduce cardiovascular mortality among patients who are clinically stable but with left ventricular failure (LVF) or left ventricular dysfunction following a myocardial infarction (MI).

Dosage Forms

This is available in Diovan 80 mg, 160 mg, 320 mg, and 40 mg (scored) tablets.

Diovan Mechanism of Action

It blocks the vasoconstricting and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by hampering the binding of angiotensin II to angiotensin I receptors in tissues, including the vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. Through this action, blood vessels are relaxed, and blood can flow more smoothly.

How to Take Diovan

Before using Diovan, it is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. You should not take medication unless you understand its usage and directions. You should consult your physician or pharmacist if you require further medical advice.

The tablet is meant for oral consumption only. This is usually prescribed once or twice a day. You may take it with or without a meal. Take the tablet and drink fluids immediately afterward. If you need to split this tablet into equal doses, ask for supervision from a healthcare professional.

Develop a dosing schedule. Do not increase or decrease your Diovan dosage. You should also not take this oral drug more frequently than advised.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not take Diovan this prescription drug if you have a known allergy to linagliptin or any inactive ingredients the capsule may contain. Watch out for any signs of severe allergic reactions including difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and neck, dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives, and rashes. If any of those occur, stop taking the medication and seek emergency medical help right away.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with a history of hyperkalemia, dehydration, heart problems, and liver disease. Considering possible drug interactions, you should also list all your prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, supplements, and herbal products.

Dizziness and lightheadedness are among the common adverse effects of this ARB. Practice safety caution when doing tasks that need alertness, especially driving. You must also restrict your alcohol intake while on this treatment.

Valsartan can increase the levels of potassium in the blood. You must look out for signs of hyperkalemia, such as palpitation, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. Consult your physician before taking potassium supplements or salt substitutes.

Pregnant moms must not take this type of drug because of the harm that it can cause to unborn babies. For breastfeeding moms, it is unknown if it can pass into the breastmilk. It is necessary to discuss all the possible risks with a healthcare provider.
