Dosage

The Flovent Diskus is available in the strength of 50 mcg/60 dose, 100 mcg/60 dose, 250 mcg/60 dose and 500 mcg/60 dose. The Flovent Nebules are available in the strength of 0.5 mg/2 ml and 2 mg/2 ml.

Usage

Flovent (Fluticasone) is a prescription corticosteroid used to treat asthma. This medication reduces symptoms and prevents asthma attacks by decreasing inflammation in the lungs which opens the airways. If this medication is used regularly every day, it will decrease the number and severity of asthma attacks; however it cannot be used to treat an asthma attack that has already begun or to relieve sudden breathing problems. When used regularly, this medication decreases the number of ocular herpes simplex virus infection. Flovent should be used at the same time each day for the best results in controlling your asthma. Flovent can be used in children 12 months of age and above and the Flovent diskus should only be used in children who are 4 years and older.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common Flovent side effects may include diarrhea, headache, hoarseness or deepened voice, stuffy nose, sinus pain, white patches or infection in your mouth or on your lips. The serious side effects include:

• Blurred vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights;
• Signs of infection such as fever, chills, sore throat, ear pain, flu symptoms;
• Skin rash, bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness;
• Weakness, tired feeling, nausea, vomiting, and feeling like you might pass out;
• Wheezing or breathing problems after using this medication;
• Worsening asthma symptoms

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Flovent if you are allergic to Fluticasone. Before you start using this medication, inform your doctor about your medical conditions and about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. Inform your doctor if you have a history of current or past infections such as tuberculosis or herpes, certain eye problems, bone loss, or liver disease. Do not use Flovent to treat an asthma attack that has already begun. You should not stop using Flovent abruptly; it has to be tapered off gradually. Long-term use of steroids may lead to bone loss (osteoporosis), especially if you smoke, if you do not exercise, if you do not get enough vitamin D or calcium in your diet, or if you have a family history of osteoporosis. Carry an id card or wear a medical alert ID to let others know that you may need an oral steroid in an emergency. You should consult with your doctor about the risks and benefits of using this medication if you pregnant or breastfeeding. There are some medications that may affect the removal of Fluticasone from your body, which may affect how this medication works. These medications include boceprevir, HIV protease inhibitors and some azole antifungals such as ketoconazole.

Do not use Flovent diskus with a spacer device. Do not exhale into Diskus. Do not wash or take apart. Use in horizontal position; do not tilt. Rinse mouth with water (without swallowing) after each use. Discard after 6 weeks (50 mcg diskus) or after 2 months (100 mcg and 250 mcg diskus) once removed from protective pouch or when the dose counter reads "0", whichever comes first (device is not reusable).
