Usage

Avita (Tretinoin) is a prescription medication used to treat acne, smooth rough facial skin, and reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles and mottled skin discoloration. The active ingredient in Avita gel is Tretinoin. Tretinoin belongs to the group of medicine called retinoids. It works by promoting peeling of affected skin areas and unclogging pores.

Avita Side Effects

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Avita are skin redness, dryness, itching, scaling, mild burning, or worsening of acne that may occur during the first 2-4 weeks of applying Tretinoin gel.

Stop using Avita and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Severe burning, stinging, or irritation of treated skin;
• Severe skin dryness;
• Severe redness, swelling, blistering, peeling, or crusting

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Tretinoin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, Vitamin A-related drugs (other retinoids such as isotretinoin), or any other allergies. Tretinoin controls acne but does not cure it. Your acne will probably get worse (red, scaling skin, and an increase in acne sores) during the first 7 to10 days you use this medication. Nevertheless, continue to use it; the acne sores should disappear. Usually, 2 to 3 weeks (and sometimes more than 6 weeks) of regular use of Tretinoin is required before improvement is seen. You should apply the gel as directed by your doctor. Do not use a larger amount or use it more frequently than recommended. Your skin will not improve any faster, increasing the risk of developing redness, peeling, and pain.

You should follow the guide below if you want to apply Tretinoin gel:
• Wash your hands and affected skin area thoroughly with mild, bland soap (not medicated or abrasive soap or soap that dries the skin) and water
• To ensure that your skin is thoroughly dry, wait for 20 to 30 minutes before applying Tretinoin
• Use clean fingertips to apply the medication
• Use enough medication to cover the affected area with a thin layer

Apply the medication to the affected skin area only. Do not let tretinoin gel get into your eyes, ears, mouth, corners, nose, or vaginal area. This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Weather extremes such as wind or cold may also irritate the skin. Use sunscreen daily and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Tell your doctor if you get sunburned or have blisters or redness. Wait until your skin has completely recovered from a sunburn before using Tretinoin. Do not stop this medication until your doctor has checked you thoroughly.

Before you start using Avita, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Allergic to Tretinoin;
• Skin problems other than acne, such as if you have eczema or rosacea;
• Skin cancer

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while using Tretinoin, call your doctor. It is not known whether this drug passes into breastmilk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Avita and other medications such as doxycycline, minocycline, and tetracycline.
