Namenda is a medication that is made to help relieve some of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Namenda works by limiting the actions of certain chemicals in the brain that have been thought to contribute to the symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Not only do the patients see and feel the effects, but the families of the patients definitely notice the difference. Namenda is used to treat moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer’s type.

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding; if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; if you have severe liver problems; if you have any other medical condition; if you have epilepsy or other seizure disorder; cataracts; liver disease; kidney disease; or a bladder or kidney infection.

This medicine can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful when driving, operating any machinery, or doing anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

Take Namenda exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Take this medicine with a full glass of water. Namenda can be taken with or without food. The liquid (oral solution) form of this medication comes with patient instructions for safe and effective use. Follow these directions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Do not mix the oral solution with any other liquids. Rinse the empty oral syringe with clean water and allow it to air dry after every use.

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine, to memantine, or any other drugs.

Most severe: Cough, chest tightness, fever, trouble breathing; chest pain, fast heart rate; confusion, hallucinations; sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body; lack of coordination; fainting or seizure (convulsions); urinating less than usual or not at all; pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness; or increased blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, trouble concentrating, chest pain, numbness, seizure).

Most common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite; dizziness, tired feeling; weight loss; swelling in your hands or feet; fast heart rate; easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness; joint pain; anxiety, aggression; skin rash, redness or swelling of or around your eyes; or urinating more than usual.
