Usage

Canasa (Mesalamine) is a drug which is prescribed to treat ulcerative colitis, proctitis and proctosigmoiditis, which are conditions of the digestive tract. Mesalamine is the active ingredient in Canasa, it belongs to the class of medications called anti-inflammatory agents. This medication works inside the intestines to reduce inflammation, pain and swelling. Canasa is also used to prevent the symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring.

Side Effects

The common side effects include diarrhea, gas, headache, discomfort when inserting the suppository, rectal pain, and stomach pain. Many people using this medication do not have any serious side effects. Inform your doctor right away if you have any of the following unlikely but serious side effects such as:
• Chest pain;
• Dark urine;
• Fever;
• Severe or prolonged headache;
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain;
• Shortness of breath;
• Signs of kidney problems;
• Worsening bloody diarrhea;
• Worsening stomach pain or cramping;
• Yellowing eyes or skin

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Canasa if you are allergic to Mesalamine or to any of the ingredients in Canasa or to medicines that contain salicylates including aspirin. Before you start using Canasa, inform your doctor if you:
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant;
• Have a history of allergic reaction to Sulfasalazine;
• Have any other medical conditions;
• Have ever had inflammation of the sac around your heart;
• Have kidney or liver problems

There may be a drug interaction between Mesalamine and other medications, tell your doctor about all the prescription medications you take including OTC and herbal supplements. Do not give this medication to children and teenagers if they have the flu, chickenpox, or other viral infections without talking to your doctor due to the risk of Reye's syndrome. Canasa suppositories may stain direct contact surfaces. Do not cut or break the suppository.
