Dosage

The generic Cimetidine is available in the strength of 200 mg and 300 mg tablets.

Usage

Tagamet (Cimetidine) is a prescription medication used to treat intestinal ulcers (including gastric and duodenal ulcers), prevent the recurrence of the ulcer, and treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus and causes heartburn. The active ingredient in Tagamet is Cimetidine. Cimetidine belongs to the class of medications called antihistamines (H2 antagonists). It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Decreasing excess stomach acid can help relieve symptoms such as stomach pain, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, cough, and trouble sleeping.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Tagamet are nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, or diarrhea.

Stop using Tagamet and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Heartburn for over 3 months;
• Nausea or vomiting that doesn’t stop;
• Painful swallowing or bloody vomiting;
• Severe stomach-ache;
• Symptoms of allergies include a swollen face, and lips, difficulty with breathing, and body rash;
• Worsening of your symptoms

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking cimetidine, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it, other H2 blockers (such as famotidine, nizatidine, or ranitidine), or any other allergies. Cimetidine comes as a tablet, and it should be taken orally with or without food. Follow your prescription label carefully and use as directed by your doctor. Do not take more than your prescribed dosage. If you are also taking antacids to relieve stomach pain as recommended by your doctor, give a space of 2 hours before using your Cimetidine medicine. Do not take more than 2 tablets (morning and evening) per day. It is recommended not to use Cimetidine for more than 2 weeks in a row without talking with your doctor. Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or worsen.

Before you start using Tagamet, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Certain lung diseases (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD);
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Intestinal tumor;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, Cimetidine should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Cimetidine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Tagamet and other drugs such as dofetilide, eliglustat, fezolinetant, lomitapide, and pimozide. Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep this medication away from children.
