Fortamet (Metformin) is a prescription medication that is combined with a proper diet and exercise program and possibly with other medications to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. By controlling your blood sugar, you can also help prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs and sexual function problems. By controlling your diabetes properly, you may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Metformin belongs to the class of drugs called biguanides. This medication works by helping restore your body’s proper response to the insulin you naturally produce. It also decreases the amount of sugar made by your liver and absorbed by your stomach or intestines. Fortamet is usually taken once daily with the evening meal.

The common side effects of Fortamet may include diarrhea, metallic taste in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, and upset stomach.

This medication may cause symptoms of high blood sugar including confusion, drowsiness, flushing, fruity breath odor, increased urination, rapid breathing and thirst.

• Fever;
• Flu symptoms;

Limit your alcohol intake while using this medication because it can increase your risk of lactic acidosis and developing low blood sugar. It may be difficult to control your blood sugar when your body is stressed. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. Metformin can cause changes in the menstrual cycle and increase the risk of becoming pregnant. You should a reliable form of birth control while taking this medication. This medication passes into breast milk in small amounts.
