What is Stiolto Respimat?

Stiolto Respimat, with the generic name tiotropium bromide and olodaterol, is a medication indicated to treat an ongoing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is also being used to prevent and control symptoms like shortness of breath and wheezing.

This oral inhalation is a combination of a long-acting muscarinic agonist and a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist. It inhibits the m3-receptors at the smooth muscle, which leads to bronchodilation. It also elevates an enzyme that relaxes the smooth muscle cells of the airway. This is available in Stiolto Respimat 2.5 mcg/2.5 mcg per actuation.

How to use Stiolto Respimat

To start, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this drug. Never use this inhalation spray if you have not fully understood all the instructions and drug information in the guide. If you need further medical advice or have further queries, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Use this inhaler regularly and with a dosing schedule for best results. Follow the exact prescription of your doctor. Do not take it more frequently than advised, or stop using it abruptly to avoid worsening conditions and increased side effects.

If you are prescribed with other inhalers, there should be at least a one-minute interval before administering another. This is to allow absorption of the medication.

Step by step guide in using Stiolto Respimat inhaler:

  1. Make sure that the cap is closed. Press the safety catch while you pull off the clear base. Do not touch the piercing element in the middle of the base.
  2. Write the discard date on the label. *Discard date – 3 months or 90 days after the cartridge has been inserted
  3. Take out the cartridge. Insert the narrow part of it into the inhaler. Put the inhaler on a firm surface, like a table, and push it down fully until it clicks into place.
  4. Put the clear base back. Do not remove it once it has already been inserted.
  5. With the cap closed, turn the clear base to the direction of the arrow. You will hear a click.
  6. Open the cap. Point the inhaler away from you and push the dose release button. Repeat step 5 and this step until you see a mist.
  7. Once the inhaler is primed, open the cap and turn the clear base to the arrow again. Then, exhale fully and deeply.
  8. Seal your lips around the mouthpiece and check if you are not blocking the air vent. Take a slow and deep breath through your mouth as you press the dose release button.
  9. Hold your breath for not less than ten seconds.
  10. Repeat steps 7 to 9 if necessary. Once you are done, close the cap of the inhaler.
