Depakene (Valproic Acid) is a medication used to treat various types of seizure disorders. This medication may sometimes be used with other seizure medications. It may also be used to treat mental or mood conditions such as bipolar disorder and to prevent migraine headaches. Valproic Acid belongs to a class of drugs known as anti-epileptic drugs. It works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain.

The common side effects of Depakene may include blurred vision or double vision, changes in appetite, diarrhea, dizziness or drowsiness, hair loss, headache, nausea, stomach pain, tremors, vomiting, walking and coordination problems, weakness, and weight gain.

Contact your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur:
• Changes in mental state;
• Confusion, feeling cold, fatigue;
• Easy bruising, unusual bleeding;
• Purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin;
• Severe drowsiness;
• Worsening seizures

Do not use Depakene if you are allergic to Valproic Acid or if you are allergic to divalproex or if you have:
• A genetic mitochondrial disorder such as Alpers disease or Huttenlocher syndrome, especially in a child younger than 2 years old;
• A urea cycle disorder;
• Liver disease

Prior to taking this medication, tell your doctors about your medical history and if you have ever had:
• A family history of a urea cycle disorder or death of infants without a known cause;
• Depression, mental illness, or suicidal thoughts or actions;
• HIV or CMV infection;
• Liver problems caused by a genetic mitochondrial disorder

Mood or mental changes should be monitored by your doctor at regular visits. Drinking alcohol with this medication can cause side effects. Depakene may cause blurred vision, or make you dizzy or may impair your reactions. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medication will affect you. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, nonprescription, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Depakene and other medications. Using Valproic Acid during pregnancy may increase the risk of serious birth defects that can occur early in pregnancy even before you know you are pregnant. Do not start or stop taking this medication without a doctor's advice. Do not take Valproic Acid to prevent migraine headaches if you are pregnant or you could become pregnant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
