Usage

Praluent (Alirocumab) is a injectable prescription injection used in adults with cardiovascular diseases to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and certain types of chest pain conditions (unstable angina) requiring hospitalisation. The injection is also lowers the level of bad cholesterol in adult diagnosed with high blood pressure. Praluent together with regular exercise or cholesterol lowering medications, it is an essential treatment option for hyperlipidemia (high blood cholesterol) including inheritable condition called Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH ). The active ingredient in Praluent is Alirocumab. Alirocumab belongs to the class of medications called Lipid-Lowering Agents, PCSK9 Inhibitors. It works by blocking the protein PCSK9, which contributes to high levels of bad cholesterol. As a result, Praluent assists the liver in removing bad cholesterol. Lowering the cholesterol level to the normal range helps reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and certain chest pain conditions (angina pectoris).

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Praluent are redness, itching, swelling, or pain at the injection site, diarrhea, muscle spasms, itching, weakness, and urinary tract infection.

Stop using Praluent and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Allergic reaction including a severe rash, redness, hives, severe itching, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue;
• Bleeding from the site of injection;
• Infections at the injection site;
• Severe body itching;
• Severe body pain;
• Uncontrol bleeding from the injection site;
• Worsening of your condition

Warnings and Interactions

Do not use Praluent if you are allergic to alirocumab or to any of the ingredients in Praluent. Praluent is given as a subcutaneous (usually in the stomach, thighs, or upper arms) injection and comes as a prefilled pen or syringe. Your doctor will teach you how to use the prefilled injection vial so you can use it at home. Do not inject other medicines with Praluent injection at the same injection site. Praluent is injected every two weeks or every four weeks (monthly). You should use it according to your doctor's prescription. You should not inject it into the infected area of the skin. Discuss with your doctor if you have pain or bleeding from the injection site. You should engage in regular exercise or as directed by your doctor. You should watch your food intake and limit your fat intake. Inform your doctor if you experience a severe side effect or no improvement in your condition.

Before you start using Praluent, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Breastfeeding or pregnant;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• High blood pressure;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Skin infection

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if Praluent will harm your unborn baby. If you are a nursing mother, you should inform your doctor before using a Praluent injection. Your doctor will decide if it is right for you or prescribe alternative medicine for your condition. There may be a drug interaction between Praluent and other drugs such as alcohol and tobacco.
