Eldopaque Cream (Hydroquinone) is a lightening topical cream that contains a medication called hydroquinone. Hydroquinone decreases the formation of melanin in the skin. Melanin is the pigment in skin that gives it a brown color. Eldopaque is used for treatment of any conditions caused by hyperpigmentation such as freckles, age spots, melasma (sun damage), or chloasma (darkened skin caused by hormonal changes). Hydroquinone produces reversible lightening of the skin by interfering with melanin production by the melanocytes. Inhibition of the enzymatic conversion of tyrosine to DOPA (dihydroxyphenylalanine) results in the desired chemical reduction of pigmentation. This causes a decrease in the number of melanocytes and decreased transfer of melanin, leading to lighter skin. The effects of Eldopaque are reversed by exposure to sun, so continued use of the product is needed until the desired results are achieved. Before using Eldopaque, apply a small amount of the medicine to a healthy part of your skin and monitor for 24 hours. If there are no side effects other than redness in the area, begin using the full, prescribed amount. Wash your hands before and after applying Eldopaque, unless the affected skin is on your hands. Store Eldopaque at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Take this medication as directed. Tell your doctor about any other medications you are currently using. It is unknown if this medication affects pregnancy or breastfeeding, so consult with your doctor about any risks or precautions. Do not use Eldopaque on open wounds or on sunburned, windburned, dry, chapped, or irritated skin. Common side effects of using Eldopaque include mild burning or stinging of treated skin, and mild itching, redness, or other irritation. Stop using Eldopaque and contact your doctor immediately if you notice severe skin redness, burning, or stinging, severe dryness, cracking, or bleeding, blisters or oozing, or blue or black discolouration of the skin. If you experience any signs of a serious allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
