Indications

Cipro is the brand name for a medication called ciprofloxacin, which belongs to a class of drugs called fluoroquinolone antibiotics.

Cipro is used to treat bacterial infections in various parts of the body, including urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, skin infections, and bone infections. Cipro works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Use and Dosage

Read the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start taking ciprofloxacin each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually twice a day in the morning and evening.

The tablet may have a bitter taste if you chew or crush it before taking it. Do not split the tablets unless they have a score line, and your doctor or pharmacist tells you to do so. The manufacturer recommends swallowing the whole or split tablet without crushing or chewing.

Take this medication at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking other products that may bind to it, decreasing its effectiveness.

Calcium-rich foods, including dairy products (such as milk, yogurt) or calcium-enriched juice, can also decrease the effect of this medication. Take this medication at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after eating calcium-rich foods, unless you are eating these foods as part of a larger meal that contains other (non-calcium-rich) foods. These other foods decrease the calcium binding effect.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist about safely using nutritional supplements/replacements with this medication.

The dosage and length of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Be watchful for an allergic reaction while on this medication. Do not take this fluoroquinolone if you have a known allergy to ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, ofloxacin, gemifloxacin, norfloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. Discontinue medication and immediately call for emergency medical help once you experience signs of hypersensitivity response, such as breathing trouble, severe dizziness, itchiness, swelling, and skin rashes.

This oral antibacterial may cause QT prolongation, which could be a medical emergency. Signs of QT prolongation are irregular heartbeat or palpitations, severe dizziness, and fainting. To avoid this condition, you must stay hydrated and avoid “water pills”/diuretics.

Avoid or limit alcoholic beverage intake while on this treatment. Alcohol may interact with this drug and worsen side effects like dizziness and lightheadedness.

Do not get vaccinated or immunized, especially with live-attenuated bacteria, while on this treatment. Vaccinations may not work well when it interacts with this fluoroquinolone antibacterial.

You may get more sensitive to the sun while taking this oral drug. Limit your sun exposure and avoid indoor tanning.
