Nordette (Levonorgestrel) is a prescription medication used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or when a birth control method like condoms fails. The contraceptive also makes periods more regular, decreases blood loss and painful periods, and decreases the risk of ovarian cysts. The active ingredient in Nordette is Levonorgestrel. Levonorgestrel belongs to a class of drugs called progestins. It works by preventing the release of an egg from the ovary or by preventing the fertilization of the egg by sperm. Nordette is only an emergency birth control method. It does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, gonorrhea, or chlamydia.

Manufacturer Information

We currently offer the generic Levonorgestrel from Canada also called Portia in the strength of 21-day and 28-day tablets. The brand Nordette is not available.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while taking Nordette. The most common side effects of Nordette may include the following:
• Breast pain or tenderness;
• Diarrhea;
• Lighter or heavier than usual periods;
• Nausea;
• Spotting;
• Tiredness

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Severe allergic reaction including itching or swelling of face, tongue, or throat;
• Severe dizziness;
• Severe lower abdominal pain

These are not all of the side effects of Nordette. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.

You should not take Nordette if you are allergic to Levonorgestrel or any ingredient in Nordette. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or planning to be pregnant;
• Have a history of blood clots;
• Have diabetes;
• Have kidney problems;
• Have liver problems;
• Have undiagnosed vaginal bleeding

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Nordette and phenobarbital, bosentan, griseofulvin, atazanavir, efavirenz, nevirapine, etec. Avoid carbamazepine, phenytoin, St.John’s wort, rifampin, or topiramate with Nordette. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Do not use Nordette if you are pregnant or if you miss two menstrual periods in a row. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. This drug passes into breast milk and may reduce the quality and quantity of milk. Take Nordette precisely as prescribed by your doctor. When starting this drug, pick a time of day that will be easy to remember. Take one active pill once daily for 21 days in a row. If you are using the 28-day tablets, take an inactive pill once daily for 7 days in a row after you have taken the last active pill. Do not skip pills even if you do not have sex very often. The drug may not be as effective if you miss active pills, and you must use another birth control method to avoid getting pregnant. If you are using the 28-day pills and miss a reminder pill, throw away the pill you missed and continue with your dose until the pack is empty. There may be some delay in becoming pregnant after you stop taking Nordette, especially if you had irregular menstrual cycles before using the drug. If you desire pregnancy and have stopped taking the pill, it is advisable to postpone conception until you begin menstruating regularly. Nordette will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. Using a condom is the only way to protect yourself from these diseases. Keep this medicine out of sight and reach of children. Store in a dry place below 250C.
