Zyprexa Information:

Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and children over 13 years old. It may also be used to treat other mental health conditions. It can be used alone or in combination with other antipsychotics or antidepressants. Zyprexa works by blocking several receptors in the brain, specifically the dopamine receptor D1, D2, D3, and D4, as well as the serotonin receptors 5HT2A, 5HT2C, 5HT3 and 5HT6. The binding of Zyprexa to these receptors allows the medication to control and regulate the chemicals in the brain, leading to a decrease in psychotic symptoms. To make sure Zyprexa is right for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had, liver disease, heart disease, high or low blood pressure, low white blood cell counts, high cholesterol or triglycerides, heart failure, heart attack, or stroke, breast cancer, seizures or epilepsy, diabetes, an enlarged prostate or difficulty urinating, bowl problems, or narrow-angle glaucoma. Zyprexa may cause problems during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant while using Zyprexa.

Common side effects of Zyprexa include weight gain (more likely in teenagers), increased appetite, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, feeling tired or restless, problems with speech or memory, tremors or shaking, numbness or tingly feeling, changes in personality, dry mouth, or increased salivation, stomach pain, constipation; or pain in your arms or legs. Call your doctor immediately if you experience uncontrolled muscle movements in your face, trouble speaking or swallowing, swelling in your hands or feet, confusion, unusual thoughts or behaviour, hallucinations, sudden weakness or ill feeling, fever, chills, or painful mouth or skin sores. Also, contact your doctor if you notice signs of dehydration, liver problems, or high blood sugar. Zyprexa can sometimes cause a nervous system reaction, which presents with stiff muscles, high fever, sweating, confusion, fast or uneven heartbeats, tremors, or feeling like you might pass out. If you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
