My insurance won't cover a prescription for Androderm. What are my options?

Question:
I have a prescription from my PCP for Androderm 2mg/24hr patch to be used daily. My insurance won't cover. What are my options? I'm a PA and my wife an RN. I have no issue using the injectable form if it will save me $

Answer:

Androderm® (testosterone transdermal system) is a prescription medication indicated for replacement therapy in males for conditions associated with a deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone.

Testosterone is classified as a Schedule III controlled substance by the U.S. DEA because it can be abused or lead to dependence. International online pharmacies approved in the PharmacyChecker Verification Program do not sell or ship controlled substances to consumers in the U.S. However, you may have options for finding savings within the U.S.

Savings on Androderm

Many pharmaceutical companies offer assistance with the cost of medications through patient assistance programs. See: information regarding patient assistance program for Androderm

Another option for finding savings on Androderm is to search online for rebates or coupons that can be used at a local pharmacy in the U.S. using a website such as NeedyMeds or GoodRx, which may provide discounts to make certain medications more affordable.

Finding an Alternative Therapy

When Androderm is still out of reach, even with available coupons, you should contact your local pharmacist.

The pharmacist may be able to work with you and your primary care physician (PCP) to find an affordable option — like determining what other forms of testosterone may be available through your local pharmacy. S/he may also assist in finding the least expensive option or in determining if any available options would be covered by your insurance.
