What is Rexulti Used For?

Rexulti (Brexpiprazole) is used for mental disorders such as schizophrenia and depression. It helps you think clearly and also helps with feelings of nervousness. It may also minimize the hallucinations you might have. It improves sleep, appetite, and energy levels and improves the overall quality of life. This drug is in the category of atypical antipsychotic or serotonin-dopamine activity modulators (SDAM).

What Are Rexulti Side Effects?

These are the side effects of Rexulti: weight gain, dizziness, drowsiness, shaking, lightheadedness, not being able to keep still, and restlessness. If any of these symptoms are experienced or worsen, please consult your doctor.

This medication might also cause a serious drop in blood pressure. This is most apparent when first starting Rexulti or increasing the dose. Be mindful and stand up slowly to avoid falling over when getting up. If you are having trouble swallowing, fainting, unusual urges, or interrupted breathing during sleep, seek out your doctor right away. Urges can include: increased sexual urges or gambling urges. Rexulti may rarely cause an increase in your blood of a hormone called prolactin. Rexulti may also cause a medical condition called tardive dyskinesia. In other cases, this condition might be permanent. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience unusual or uncontrolled movements, particularly the mouth, face, lips, legs, or arms.

Rexulti can also rarely cause your blood sugar to increase. This can cause your risk of diabetes to improve or worsen. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of high blood sugar which include: thirst or urination. If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar regularly, share the results with your doctor, and be sure to exercise and eat properly as instructed. Weight gain may also occur and increase your triglyceride or blood cholesterol levels. This can cause you to have a higher risk of heart disease.

Serious Side Effects

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any severe symptoms. These may include seizures or a rare condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). Symptoms of NMS include muscle stiffness, fever, tenderness, fevers, severe tiredness, weakness, sweating, extreme confusion, irregular or fast heartbeat, signs of kidney problems, dark urine, or a change in the amount of urine.

Allergic Reaction

If you experience itching, rash, swelling of the tongue, throat, face, trouble breathing, or extreme dizziness, seek medical attention right away. These are signs of an allergic reaction. Although rare, it can occur.

Warnings and Interactions – Rexulti

Before using Rexulti, make sure to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any medical history you may have, such as kidney problems, dementia, personal or family history of diabetes, liver problems, high triglyceride, and cholesterol levels, seizures, heart problems, stroke, low white blood cell count, trouble with sleeping or breathing during sleep (sleep apnea). Rexulti and alcohol or marijuana should not be taken together as this drug can cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not use machinery or do anything that requires great focus, including driving, until you are sure you can do it safely.

Rexulti might also be the cause for you to sweat less. This can increase the risk of you having a heat stroke. To avoid this, do not do activities or exercise in direct sunlight, avoid hot tubs or if the weather is hot, make sure to drink a lot of fluids and dress in light garments. If you find yourself overheating, look for a place you can cool off immediately. If you experience mental or mood changes, dizziness, headaches, and fevers, seek medical attention immediately. Older people may experience sensitivity to the symptoms, which can cause their risk of falling to increase and cause death in older adults.

During pregnancy, Rexulti should only be used when necessary. Mothers who have given birth within three months may experience their child having the risk of symptoms, such as shakiness, muscle stiffness, drowsiness, problems breathing or eating, and constant crying. If you see these, contact your doctor right away. Since mood or mental problems, such as depression or schizophrenia, can cause problems if left untreated, it is not advisable to stop Rexulti use unless your doctor has instructed you to do so. If you are planning or expecting a baby, speak with your doctor about the risks and benefits of this drug. It is not known if Rexulti can pass through breast milk, so talk with your doctor before breastfeeding.

How to take Rexulti

Rexulti is usually taken by mouth with or without food intake, typically once every day. Rexulti dosages will rely on your medical condition and response to treatment. If you are taking other medication, whether prescription or non-prescription, or herbal products, please inform your doctor. Take Rexulti at the same time every day and take it regularly for the most benefit from it.

Rexulti Dosages

Before the dosing information, your doctor may instruct you to start Rexulti from a lower dose and increase slowly to reduce the risk of side effects. For the usual adult dose for schizophrenia, the initial dose will be 1 mg taken orally once daily from day 1 through 4. The titration regimen will be based on your response or tolerability to the drug. Titrate up to 2 mg once daily from day 5 to 7, then up to 4 mg once daily on day 8. The maintenance dose of Rexulti will be 2mg oral once a day and the maximum dose will be 3mg a day.
